SUMMARY:Norwich Native Daughter Award Presentation honoring Cathy Osten
DESCRIPTION:The Norwich Native Son-Daughter Award was created in 1968\, originally as part of the Norwich Rose Arts Festival. \n\n\n\nThe Native Son/Daughter Award is presented annually by the Norwich Noontime Rotary Club\, the Norwich Sunrise Rotary Club\, and the Norwich Woman’s City Club. It recognizes outstanding achievements by Norwich\, Connecticut natives who reached those achievements while living outside the Norwich area.  \n\n\n\nThe Norwich Rotary Clubs and the Norwich Woman’s City Club are proud to announce the 2025 Norwich Native Daughter is Connecticut State Senator Cathy Osten. \n\n\n\nCathy was born and raised in Norwich. Her father Jim\, owned and operated the Ten Pin Bowling Alley in Norwichtown and Cathy worked there for years. \n\n\n\nAfter graduating from Norwich Free Academy\, she enlisted in the U.S. Army. She spent there years in Japan as a translator and interpreter of the Chinese and Mandarin languages. She rose to the rank of Sergeant. Upon her honorable discharge\, she returned to Norwich. She enrolled in Mohegan College (now part of Three Rivers Community College) and graduated with an Associates Degree in Liberal Arts. \n\n\n\nShe began employment with the Department of corrections and worked for 21 years at a correctional center. While there she served as President of the corrections supervisory council for the CSEA/SEIU. She left with the rank of Lieutenant. \n\n\n\nShe married and is a mother and a grandmother. She also served as the 1st Selectwoman for Sprague. In addition\, she holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Civil Air Patrol. She was elected as a Democratic State Senator in November 2012 (filling the seat formerly held by Edith Prague) for the 19th district\, and her 1st legislation session began in 2013. She is currently serving her sixth term. She will be eligible for re-election in 2026. \n\n\n\nAt present her committee assignments are: \n\n\n\n\nGeneral law committee member\n\n\n\nLegislative Management committee and legislation review member\n\n\n\nVeteran Affairs committee member\n\n\n\nCo-Chair of senate Appropriations committee\n\n\n\nTransportation committee member\n\n\n\nSpecial Education committee member.\n\n\n\n\nCathy was nominated by Jan Sauvageau\, Rotarian\, Norwich Sunrise Rotary Club.

Scott Diversity Award and Community Diversity Award to a resident and organization\, respectively\, who helped promote peace and understanding within our diverse community. \n\n\n \n\n\nFREE! ***Entertainment throughout the evening*** FREE!\n\n \nMany local and diverse entertainment acts.\n\n \n\n\nEverything takes place at Chelsea Parade on Broadway and Union Street in Norwich.\n\nThe event itself is free to attend\, and food tickets to try the food from our wonderful local restaurants are an amazingly low $10 for an individual.

SUMMARY:2024 Norwich Rotary Golf Tournament
DESCRIPTION:We take our golf seriously. We also take seriously the unique opportunity that the Norwich Rotary Golf Tournament provides to benefit MANY community organizations. \nLast year we raised $14\,000\, which was dispersed to heartfelt programs\, including Amber Alert programs for kids through age 18 and warm winter coats for families in need. Most of the funds are channeled back into our local community\, however\, a portion is forwarded on to Rotary International to help with projects involving fresh drinking water or the eradication of polio. \nPlease join us for a great day of fellowship\, fun\, and wonderful causes at the Norwich Golf Course. On behalf of the community\, we serve\, thank you for making this successful tournament possible.

It recognizes outstanding achievements by Norwich\, Connecticut natives who reached those achievements while living outside the Norwich area.  \n\n\n\nThe Norwich Rotary Clubs and the Norwich Woman’s City Club are proud to announce the 2024 Norwich Native Son is filmmaker Andrew Gernhard of Synthetic Cinema International\, LLC. \n\n\n\nBorn and educated in Norwich\, he graduated from NFA in 1995\, and continued his education at Southern Connecticut State University\, graduating with a Major in Communication (Television Production) and Minor in Graphic Design. \n\n\n\nIn a successful producing career spanning over two decades he has worked on a variety of projects\, mostly through his Connecticut-based production company in Rocky Hill. Including a series of successful feature horror films for NBC Universal‘s Chiller Network and the hugely popular annual Christmas movies for the Hallmark Channel. Coincidentally\, he produced “Wishin & Hopin” written by 2023 Norwich Native Son Wally Lamb (Andrew’s former English teacher at NFA.) Andrew reached back to him\, and Wally and Andrew filmed this movie at NFA. It is now a Lifetime Christmas Movie. \n\n\n\nIn recent years his company has created strong working relationships with many prolific executive producers\, major studios and networks such as Hallmark\, Paramount\, Netflix \, Lifetime\, Lionsgate\, Disney\, NBC Universal and more. \n\n\n\nGernhard was awarded the 2023 Joyce Resnikoff Tourism Award by the Mystic Chamber of Commerce for supporting\, growing\, and nurturing tourism in Southeastern Connecticut. \n\n\n\nHe was lauded by Governor Ned Lamont for helping to keep the economy afloat during the COVID-19 pandemic due to the safely employing local workers and the utilizing COVID-19 affected businesses involved in the making of so many movies in Connecticut. \n\n\n\nOf the five movies he produced in 2023\, two of them\, (one filmed in Scotland and one filmed at the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina) earned the two highest Original TV Movies of all cable 2023. \n\n\n\nAt age 47\, his credits include over 100 movies for major Networks and Studios\, many are now being produced internationally such as in Finland\, Scotland and Iceland. At the present time\, he is producing another movie in Iceland\, however will return by the time of this event. \n\n\n\nHe is now a resident of his beloved Connecticut with his partner Christy their two young daughters and rescue dogs. \n\n\n\nAndrew has stated that his “roots\,” established in his home town\, led to the “solid supportive background and respect for honest hard work\, New England practicality and prudence” has stood him in good stead all over the world and in his life. He attributes that much of these values were instilled in him by the schools he attended and that “The period at NFA” prepared him for college and the world.. \n\n\n\nAndrew was nominated by Jan Sauvageau\, President of the Woman’s City Club of Norwich.

He will be honored at a luncheon on June 7th\, 2023 at the Holiday Inn Norwich at noon. Tickets for the event are available below.  \n\n\n\nLamb is the author of six bestselling novels. His first and second novels\, She’s Come Undone and I Know This Much Is True\, were Oprah’s Book Club selections and number one New York Times bestsellers. I Know This Much Is True was adapted as an HBO limited series starring Mark Ruffalo and Lamb’s fourth novel\, Wishin’ and Hopin’\, was the basis of a Lifetime TV Christmas movie of the same name. Several of Lamb’s novels are set in the fictional town of Three Rivers\, Connecticut\, loosely based on his hometown of Norwich. Together\, Lamb’s novels have been translated into 17 languages. \n\n\n\nLamb is also the editor of Couldn’t Keep It to Myself\, I’ll Fly Away\, and You Don’t Know Me\, three volumes of autobiographical essays authored by his writing workshop students at York Correctional Institute\, Connecticut’s maximum-security women’s prison. In 2004\, the workshop and the first of these titles was the focus of a story on CBS-TV’s Sixty Minutes. Lamb volunteered at York from 1999 to 2019. Before that\, he taught at the Norwich Free Academy (1972 to 1997) and ran the Creative Writing department at UConn from 1997 to 1999. \n\n\n\nHonors for Wally Lamb include a National Endowment for the Arts grant\, the Barnes and Noble “Writers for Writers” Award\, the New England Book Award\, the Friends of the Library USA Readers’ Choice Award\, the Connecticut Bar Association’s Distinguished Public Service Award\, and Distinguished Alumni awards from the University of Connecticut and Vermont College. Wally Lamb was honored to be chosen as NFA’s first Teacher of the Year in 1989. \n\n\n\nLamb holds Bachelors and Masters Degrees from UConn and a graduate degree from Vermont College of the Fine Arts. He is forever grateful for the education he received at the following Norwich schools: Broad Street and Buckingham Schools\, Kelly Middle School (then Kelly Junior High)\, and the Norwich Free Academy. \n\n\n\nAs this year’s Native Son-Daughter recipient\, Wally is pleased to join the ranks of past honorees: his cousin\, Dr. Frank Pedace (1981)\, his fellow 1968 NFA graduates\, Pete Slosberg (2001) and Dr. Mike Morosky (2017)\, and his former NFA student\, Judge Nina Elgo (2015.)
