Bob Farwell for Fellowship recited a reprise of a prior Fellowship on the Grey Squirrel that a Rotarian requested to be replayed.  Bob recited a poem by Humbert Wolfe called The Grey Squirrel.  Here it is:

THE GREY SQUIRREL

Like a small grey

coffee-pot,

sits the squirrel

He is not

all he should be.

kills by dozens

trees, and eats

his red-brown cousins.

The keeper on the

other hand,

who shot him, is

a Christian, and

loves his enemies

which shows

the squirrel was not

one of those.

Announcements:

President Jim Daly had the following announcements:

  • The “No Show Gala” is rolling along nicely but is still short of the goal of $10,000, so get your pledges in. Mike Cooney reported as of 4/3 the total is $7,800.00 and there are a good amount of members who gave last year that have yet to do so.
  • Celebrate Cultural Norwich Committee will meet on April 8th at 2 pm at Foundry 66.
  • The Native Son program will take place June 5th honoring retired Chicago Symphony viola master Charles Pikler at the Holiday Inn.
  • Bella Fiore will have a grand re-opening Friday April 5th in the evening.

  • The Rotary Pancake Breakfast on the Norwich Little League Opening Day will be on April 27th at Dodd Stadium.  Contact Rodney Green and Jim O’Shea if you can help out the morning of the event.  Start time is 7:15 am.
  • Evening with the Author” event for the benefit of the Otis Library will take place on April 12th at the Norwich Inn.  The club had a pair of tickets for being a sponsor that Andy Grant graciously paid $60 to go.
  • Jim Daly said the club received 2 thank you notes, one from Wayne Silva of The Friends of Kenya and Bob Farwell of the Otis Library for our club support.
  • Jim Daly also announced fellow Rotarian Bob Reed will be the recipient of the 2019 Connecticut Rivers Council Boy Scouts “Leadership Award.”

Happy Dollars: Rodney Green

  • Rodney started things off saying the season is starting for his catering business and he is looking for responsible people to employ as he will have plenty of work for them.
  • Jim Daly Welcomed guests Marissa Miller and Dana Dowdell.
  • Mike Gordon gave in honor of the UConn Woman’s basketball team making it to the Final Four!  Unfortunately he and Joan missed the Elite Eight game as they were stuck in traffic in Ohio.  They did get updates from their 9 year old grandson over the cell phone!
  • Andy Nollman gave happy dollars for today’s club guests, Stan Lucas’s new Chocolate Lab puppy Amos and he’s happy to have picked up his parents at the airport from Florida as they will be north for the summer.
  • Andy Grant gave in honor of Bob Reed award and that he spent 82 days in Utah over the winter skiing with his 78 year old friend who has the nickname “Ironman” as he ski’s daily from 9am to 4pm!  Andy also broke his thumb skiing!
  • Marissa Miller told the club that the Full Power Radio is having a birthday party at the Mohegan Sun Wolf Den Saturday.
  • Jen Granger recently attended a conference in Washington D.C. and reminded the club that April is Autism Awareness Month.  Also go to Ben & Jerry’s at the Mohegan Sun anytime on April 9th and buy an Ice Cream and the UCFS will benefit.
  • Kyle Muenzner reported that there will be a Business Club Event at Three Rivers on April 25th at 5:15.  He is also studying for a Business Law test that he hopes to do well in.  Kyle also gave the sad news that he will be leaving the club sometime during 2019 to relocate to New York.  He will still be running his business and maintaining his business relationships here but will be doing it from NY.
  • Bill Champagne gave for Andy Grant purchasing the ARC Film Festival Tickets and that he also has tickets to the event on April 18th.
  • Mike Cooney gave for his son Matt’s Little League team that he manages and he only hit 2 kids while pitching to them during practice! He was joking we think!  He said it was cold that day and his son Matt is developing into quite a hitter!  He also wanted us to pray for his daughter Katie as she is a hand full.  She cut her own hair recently and looked like Cyndi Lauper by the time she was finished!
  • Suzy Hurlbert gave for Kyle and relayed a very sad story of an auto accident her daughter had that resulted in a fatal injury to the person she hit with her car.  It was a terrible accident and when all was said and done she was charged with Negligent Homicide and was sentenced to community service.  She is thankful that her daughter can now move forward with her life. Accidents are just that, accidents. Suzy also reported that the realtors association received a $5,000 grant for diversity and the association will be sponsoring a report called The Sheba Report that is about black family ownership.  She invited all the bankers in the room to please consider attending and take part.

AuctionMarie Osborne auctioned off a really nice bottle of Jonathan Edwards Red Wine and two wine glasses.  Tom Adams was the high bidder at $35.00!

LotteryRich Pascal:

Marie Osborne, Mike Gordon and Suzy Hurlbert all drew cards to no avail!

Guest Speaker:   Jim Daly introduced Dana Dowdell from Boss Consulting who gave an informative program on Human Resources Do’s and Don’ts’s.
