Norwich Rotary Club

Norwich Noontime Rotary for July 22, 2020

  • President Mary gaveled the meeting to order at precisely 12:15;
  • Keith Caplet provided an extemporaneous invocation;
  • Fellowship with Ray! No birthdays, but an anniversary for Rodney.  Ray delighted his audience with a volley of jokes all of which could be repeated in public without fear of embarrassment.
  • President Mary contributed announcements of various magnitudes:
    • Laura Hobart misses club members and sends greetings;
    • Enough money has been raised to purchase 4.2 goats but a majority believe purchasing a full fifth goat is desirable; Credible sources report the goats are in agreement.
    • Gary is collecting money for the golf tournament;
    • Mary inquired about Larry Fowler. We hope to see him soon.
    • Next week is club assembly which always stimulated great expectations and topical speculation.
  • Happy Dollars with Jen G.
    • Jen recounted her recent visit with her mother and the novelty of being the only family member on the floor due to COVID-19;
    • President Mary reported a search for two kittens and finding two for Roz’s brother. They are named Bob and Alan. Your reporter would prefer they be rechristened, Ozzie and Osborn, but alas, he is a voice in the wilderness.
    • Kevin W. played golf with Stan Lucas and had a check for the golf tournament;
    • Mike C. reported that he was immured at home caring for Katie, who was ill. Feel better soon!
    • Mike M. related a recent sailing trip in the Thames River with his son, during which they encountered a seal!
    • Bill C. volunteered to distribute PPE’s which were gratefully received. There was difficulty distributing surgical gowns. An unsubstantiated rumor claimed they were original Versace gowns, but they proved to be poor imitations. Several indignant recipients returned them. In shreds.
    • Gary Y. Spoke of family dinner and the results of losing to Andy G. in tennis and is hoping to play golf. He was prepared for invocation but was preempted by Keith.
    • Andy G. Proffered $10 for goats, getting the club a step further to a whole goat, and waxed poetically about the quality of the bread at Poppy and Rye.
  • Lottery with Bill C.
    • Keith-No!
    • Theresa-No!
    • Kathryn T.-No
    • The frisson that preceded the lottery soon dissipated, replaced by muted groans and barely audible imprecations.
  • Speaker-Kevin W. discussed the challenges of conducting business during the pandemic. In particular accomodating different services to the social distancing protocols, the consolidation of proceedings to a single courthouse, and the growing number of wills he is called upon to provide.
