Returning to a virtual format, a stalwart group of club members was called to order by club president Mary.
Keith Caplet in his new role as a retiree provided a fine, extemporaneous invocation.
For Fellowship, Nancy Gentes noted Lottie Scott’s 30 years as a member. In the last of her December monologues, Nancy enlighted those assembled on the origins of many familiar saying, including such chestnuts as “pound salt,” “get the *&^%$%^*out of Dodge” and “close but no cigar.”
Announcements included the following:
- Mike Cooney is addressing matters involving Benji’s Fund;
- Jim Daly is working on a slate of officers for the upcoming year;
- President Mary is working on a Zoom version of the lottery. News of this inspired several haikus and a round of applause.
Happy Dollars featured the sonorous tones of Barry Shead. Barry was very happy to have his granddaughter visiting. She made a cameo appearance during the meeting and should return periodically to entertain the club. Gary Young is happy to receive a government check for any amount and encouraged those who can “share the wealth” to buy gift cards at local businesses. Former club president Mike Cooney reported that his children received a drone for Christmas and despite a warning from the Strategic Air Command he flew it in the house. In a related event, an international incident involving said drone and the Latvian dairy industry was narrowly avoided. Andy Nollman was happy to bid 2020 adieu and lamented the euthanizing of his family’s kitten. President Mary saw Suki on the news discussing the Global Cities initiative. Bill was happy to get into the meeting and seconded Gary’s gift card idea. Kathryn expressed great joy at seeing her children and hopes for a kinder, gentler New Year. Keith allowed that he was looking forward to virtual pinochle games. (your correspondent urges Keith to find a game that is easier to spell!) Susy reported a busy year and was happy to see her son. Joel introduced Shania, who keeps him in line and in good health. She is looking for an apartment and welcomes suggestions.
The club auction featured a gift card contributed by Gary Young, redeemable at “Sweet Mama’s.” A spirited round of bidding concluded with Bill Champagne’s victory, which he accepted with modesty and self-effacement.
Susy provided an enlightening overview of her life before real estate, which included a long time association with competitive skating and ice shows. Featured were several clips of her performances around the country. A wonderful introduction to one member’s biography!
