Bob said over the past weekend he watched some of the worst movies ever made.  Number one was a true epic that was produced by none other than Howard Hughes.  The Conqueror is a 1956 American epic film directed by Dick Powell and written by Oscar Millard. The film stars John Wayne as the Mongol conqueror Genghis Khan and co-stars Susan Hayward, Agnes Moorehead, and Pedro Armendáriz.  The film was principally shot near St. George, Utah.  Despite the stature of the cast and a respectable box office performance, the film was a critical flop; it is often ranked as one of the worst films of the 1950s and also as one of the worst films ever made.  Wayne, who was at the height of his career, had lobbied for the role after reading the script and was widely believed to have been grossly miscast.  The Conqueror was listed in the 1978 book The Fifty Worst Films of All Time.[6] Wayne was posthumously named a “winner” of a Golden Turkey Award for his performance in the film. Of the 220 film crew members, 91 (comprising 41.36% of the crew) developed cancer during their lifetime, while 46 (or 20.91%) died from it. When this was learned, many suspected that filming in Utah and surrounding locations, near nuclear test sites, was to blame.   Although the number of cancer cases among the cast and crew is in line with the average for adults in the US at the time, the perception of a link between the film’s location and subsequent illness remains, not least because many of those involved in the film developed cancer at a younger age than average.  Reportedly, Hughes felt guilty about his decisions regarding the film’s production, particularly over the decision to film at a hazardous site. He bought every print of the film for $12 million and kept it out of circulation for many years until Universal Pictures purchased the film from his estate in 1979.

*Jen brought her dad up to their lake house for Father’s Day and they had a great time with family.  It was a somewhat difficult year as it was the first one celebrated without her mom.

*Gary Young welcomed Sheila Hayes to today’s meeting.  Stan Lucas, Rodney Green, Mike Matera and Gary played in the ARC Golf Tournament last week and won a bunch of raffle prizes including Lionel Richie tickets.  Gary also thanked Andrew Nollman for handling some investments for him that paid off handsomely.

*Kathryn Tracey is excited to be celebrating her wedding anniversary with tickets to the red hot Yankees!

*Mike Matera gave $20.00 in honor of his wedding anniversary.  Also, Mike had sad news that his Rottweiler Oscar crossed over the Rainbow Bridge last week.  Oscar was 12 years old and will be missed by his entire family.  On Father’s Day Mike got a call from a very old friend that his truck broke down in Vermont.  Mike drove a trailer that day 4 hours to Vermont to get the truck and help his friend out.  Asked upon arrival back in Connecticut what was owed Mike said nothing.  That’s what old friends do!  Mike also won Red Sox Tickets at the ARC Golf Tournament!

*Andrew Nollman hosted Father’s Day at his house and was happy that the new deck was finished for that day!

*Rodney Green Gave an egg update!  Price has been stable for the past 2 weeks at $2.17 a dozen.  He enjoyed attending the US Open in Boston last week with his daughter.  It included a great deal of walking!

*Andy Grant said his daughter has been staying at his home and is working remotely.  Her boyfriend has also been staying there and Andy has been teaching him the finer points of sailing taking him out on the Sound on his Hobie Cat.

*Sheila Hayes thanked Gary Young for attending the Rotary Community Corps meetings.

*Lottie Scott had happy dollars to say she’s happy to be at the meeting in person and thanked Sheila for the ride!
