Susy’s fellowship covered historic events that happened on May 15th! Here’s a couple of interesting ones!
In 1937 former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright was born.
In 1972 Democratic Candidate for President, Alabama Governor George Wallace, was wounded while campaigning by a gun shot that left him permanently paralyzed below the waist in an assassination attempt.
1940 nylon stockings first went on sale to the general public that sold out in a few quick days!
1918 the first regular “Air Mail” route in the US opened between New York City and Washington, D.C.
1886 American poet Emily Dickinson, who commanded a singular brilliance of style and integrity of vision, died in Amherst, MA.
Membership Minute: Stan Lucas called James Hyman from ARC, Jeremy Doyle and Kelly Whipple from Jane Ryan Insurance to the front of the room to induct them into the Norwich Rotary Club. The Rotary “Day of Service” will be this Saturday May 18th. This year area Rotary Clubs hope to package 22,000 meals. (NEW LOCATION) United Methodist Church in Gales Ferry. 11 Rotarians from our club have signed up to help out on that day, but there’s always room for more! 8:30am start!
Native Son/Daughter Lunch will be on June 5th. The Norwich Rotary Clubs and the Norwich Woman’s City Club are proud to announce the 2024 Norwich Native Son is filmmaker Andrew Gernhard of Synthetic Cinema International, LLC. On June 20th from 1 to 3pm there will be a meal packing event at the United Way/ Gemma Moran Food Center in New London.
The Rose Arts Festival will be on June 29th. Consider volunteering a couple hours at the Rotary tent that day along with our friends from the Sunrise Club and the Rotary Community Corps!
Anyone knows of a Rotarian who has been ill, please let the Sunshine Committee know.
September 9th will be this years “Celebrate Cultural Diversity” event. Mark your calendars now!
Anyone with spare clean egg cartons please give them to Bonnie Johnson to give to St. Francis Hospital. She brought cookies as an incentive to reward donors. Don’t forget to bring your clean egg cartons when you are finished with them!
Members are encouraged to fill out a donation form and donate to the Rotary Clock Project.

June 19th will be our Rose Garden Luncheon.
June 26th will be our Change of Command Ceremony.
September 4th will be the Annual Golf Tournament! Brochures should be ready next week so you can go get sponsors and golf teams! Mark your calendar now!

Nancy welcomed our new members that were inducted today!
Rodney Green gave $20.00 to say he is happy that his grandson is getting married at 3pm in a ceremony at the City Hall in Providence!
Roz Etra said she worked at her Synagogue suppling lunches and take out for the needy. It’s sad of the demand that is out there. She also welcomed Kelly Whipple and said she was her music teacher many years ago!
Bill Champagne welcomed our new members. A sad dollar to inform that fellow Rotarian Pat Marshall’s sister died. The Race Equity Committee will be sponsoring an event at NFA on May 29th. The subject is “Right to Read.” The event is free but limited to 50 people. Call Bill if you would like to attend. Bill also gave $5.00 from Lottie Scott as he had the honor to drive her to today’s meeting.
Andrew Nollman welcomed our newest members and was happy to attend his niece’s graduation from WPI.
Mike Cooney is looking forward to June 5th as it’s the last day of coaching softball. He’s so busy with the Scout’s it will give him a free evening for a change.
Andy Grant is happy to be back in the area and is looking forward to his daughter’s upcoming wedding.
Susy Hurlbert welcomed the new members and is happy to see that they you young ones! Susy also mentioned how she treasures the hour away from the craziness of her office and come to Rotary and get her “Zen” back! ECAR Shredding Event will be this Saturday from 10 to 1 at the ECAR office in North Franklin.
Mandy Crispim gave in honor of her 2nd Anniversary in Rotary!
Barry Shead welcomed our new members and was happy Andy Grant is back in town! Barry just returned from a cruise to Bermuda and was happy of the savings he had by sailing out of New Jersey and didn’t have to pay for airfare to get to the cruise ship! He also is selling “Pluck-a-Duck” raffle tickets for the Putnam Rotary. See Barry to purchase.
Gary Young reminded members to take part in the putting contest following the meeting.

Program: No formal program. Cake was shared to celebrate our newest members and Gary’s putting contest ensued.
