Thomas McCarthy – 2010 Norwich Native Son

2009 Norwich Native Son Thomas McCarthy was born in Connecticut in 1934 and had been a thoroughbred racehorse owner and trainer since 1960. His horse General Quarters was the 2009 Blue Grass Stakes winner and ran in the Kentucky Derby.

McCarthy also had a long career in education. He was a teacher, counselor and principal at Seneca High School starting in the 1950s, and later served as principal at Durrett High School and Valley High School. He retired in the late 1980s and moved into horse training full-time.

Thomas McCarthy was a 1952 graduate of Norwich Free Academy. He passed away on July 21st, 2016 after a battle with melanoma.
