George Shattuck – 23rd Norwich Rotary President

George Shattuck served as the 23rd President of the Norwich Rotary Club, serving from 1942-43.

He was born on April 14th, 1900 in Providence, Rhode Island; the son Alpon Shattuck and Evelyn Belcher.

In 1924 he earned his graduate degree in Philosophy, from Wesleyan University. He began his teaching career in North Attleboro, Massachusetts. He joined the Masons in 1923 in Bristol, Mass.

Shattuck was the Principal of Norwich Free Academy for 25 years. During the 1940s, when substitute teachers were scarce, Mr. Shattuck would often cover classes himself.

Shattuck was recognized by the Connecticut Association of Schools in 1958 with their highest honor, the CAS Citation. The citation is “awarded to practicing or recently retired school administrators who have made extraordinary and long-term contributions to CAS-CIAC. Recipients must have been actively involved in the association for a minimum of eight years.”

The George Shattuck Award is a scholarship at NFA, is funded by the NFA Alumni Association, is awarded to a student pursuing higher education.

In 1965, the Shattuck Building at NFA is named for him.

Shattuck passed away on April 21st, 1980.
